Walter Williams, The Hand Behind the Work

Walter Williams is a fine artist, graphic designer, and photographer with a career spanning more than four decades. He studied Fine Art and Graphic Design at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, where his early professional work led to award-winning graphic design recognized at the city level.
After returning to his hometown, Walter worked as a graphic designer for a local newspaper, creating advertising layouts before relocating to Cody, Wyoming. There, he served as a product designer for the Buffalo Bill Historical Center gift shop—an experience that sparked a lasting interest in silk scarf design.
Walter later moved to Billings, Montana, where for the past 30 years he has balanced his personal art practice with the design and stewardship of DanWalt Botanical Gardens. Alongside his life partner, Dan, he co-managed the gardens for 21 years and held numerous Art Walk exhibitions and annual solo shows on site.
Scarves by Walter is his most recent artistic expression. Each design is created from Walter’s original photography, captured during travels around the world. Photography has been a central part of his creative life for more than 45 years.
The scarves are printed on silk satin or silk twill, finished with hand-rolled edges, and produced as limited-edition wearable art. Each piece bears Walter’s signature, sometimes subtly integrated into the design itself.
Walter currently lives in Billings, Montana, with Dan, his partner of 30 years.
